Play Dreams of the Old Ones and descend into cosmic dread

Dreams of the Old Ones transports you to the 1920s, an age of jazz, shadows, and secrets, where beneath the surface of modern life stir ancient forces older than humanity itself. In this world, sanity is fragile, reality bends under unseen influences, and every whispered name or half-buried cult ritual could unravel the truth of existence.

From the mist-choked streets of Arkham to the storm-battered docks of Innsmouth and the desolate hills of Dunwich, investigators, scholars, and ordinary souls are drawn into mysteries beyond comprehension. Here, the Old Ones do not simply threaten life - they threaten meaning itself.

Caught between skeptical authorities, secret cults, and the madness of forbidden knowledge, you must decide your path: search for answers, protect the innocent, or risk everything by peering too long into the abyss. In Dreams of the Old Ones, survival is never certain, and victory may come at the cost of your very mind.

Meet Dr Herbert West

the Reanimator

Whispered about in medical halls and feared in the shadows, Dr. Herbert West walks the thin line between science and blasphemy. Brilliant, arrogant, and obsessed, he has pushed further than any living man in his pursuit of conquering death itself.

Armed with his unholy serum and an intellect unbound by morality, West has made corpses twitch, breathe… and rise again. To him, this is progress — the ultimate triumph of reason over fate. To others, it is desecration.

Some see him as a visionary.
Others as a monster.
But make no mistake: if you follow his path, you will not emerge unchanged.

Will you confront him — or seek to share in his forbidden discoveries?

Factions in shadow

In Dreams of the Old Ones, faith becomes obsession ... and obsession becomes power

Beneath the jazz and optimism of the 1920s, secret gatherings swell in number. Men and women meet in candlelit basements, in crumbling churches, in coastal towns where the sea whispers with an ancient voice. They pray, chant, and bleed for masters older than the world.

The Cults of the Old Ones thrive in silence. To outsiders they are lunatics, but within their ranks, faith burns hotter than reason. They promise revelation, transformation, and survival in the new age their gods will bring.

Some see them as parasites, tearing at the fragile fabric of society.
Others whisper that they are simply preparing for an inevitable future.

Every chant strengthens their hold.

Every sacrifice pulls the world closer to the abyss.

Will you infiltrate their rites… or be consumed by them?

Are you ready?

Venture into the haunted streets of 1920s Arkham, where the names of Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep echo in forbidden tomes. In Dreams of the Old Ones, test your courage and sanity as the AI Loremaster draws you into a tale of cosmic horror.

The eternal Dread

Dreams of the Old Ones is a world not of creation, but of intrusion. Ancient forces press constantly against the fragile walls of human understanding, bleeding into the waking world through dreams, cult rituals, and inexplicable events. The 1920s are an age of modernity and reason, yet beneath the veneer of progress lurk truths that minds are not meant to hold.

Knowledge itself becomes a battlefield. To glimpse the Old Ones is to risk madness; to deny them is to stumble blind into their grasp. Cities bustle with energy, science, and jazz, but their streets hide whispered prayers to inhuman gods. Scholars pry open tomes best left sealed, investigators uncover conspiracies that stretch beyond generations, and cultists weave faith into chains that bind entire communities.

The struggle is endless, not between armies or nations, but between revelation and sanity. Every question asked may open a door that cannot be closed. Every answer found may cost more than ignorance ever would.

Legends say that the Old Ones do not need to conquer humanity — they only need us to look their way. And once seen, they are never forgotten.

It is an eternal dread: a cycle of curiosity, discovery, and collapse. Each generation dares to peer into the abyss, and each pays the price.

Welcome to Places of Dread

Where knowledge becomes a curse.

In Dreams of the Old Ones, the most ordinary of places hide the seeds of terror. A lecture hall, a dusty archive, a library lit by gaslight — all can become gateways to unspeakable truths. Books once meant to enlighten now whisper madness; professors who should teach safety now guide students to the edge of the abyss.

These places are not merely backdrops — they are traps. Every shadowed corridor and every forgotten shelf is a chance to stumble upon the forbidden. A ritual hidden in plain sight, a page that should never be read, a truth that will not let go once seen.

Here, even stone walls and polished wood seem to breathe with secrets. And once you cross the threshold, you will never see the world the same way again.

The people and secrets of Dreams

The world of Dreams of the Old Ones is inhabited not only by ordinary citizens of the 1920s, but by shadows, cults, and scholars who shape destinies from behind closed doors.

You will walk the streets of Arkham, Boston, and Innsmouth, among skeptics who laugh at whispered horrors… and believers who kneel before them. Some are academics at the Miskatonic University, guarding libraries of knowledge too dangerous to open. Others are members of secret societies and cults — the Starry Wisdom, the Silver Twilight — whose rituals blur the line between faith and madness.

Figures of legend and dread return again and again: necromancers like Joseph Curwen, strange heirs like Wilbur Whateley, or investigators who risk everything to pull back the veil. Even the most innocent passerby may be more than they seem — an artist painting visions not their own, a sailor who has heard the sea whisper, a detective who has seen too much.

The people of Dreams are not merely allies or enemies. They are threads in a web that binds you ever closer to the abyss. Some will aid you, some will betray you, and some will drag you with them into truths beyond imagining.

Which will you trust… and which will you fear?

Playtest was very fun! I was very impressed with how the game master would respond to parts of my entire message. Usually nothing I said was left out or forgotten.

I finished my story in Kesi. I love reading books and playing this game really got me into it. A majority of my decisions worked and some of them surprisingly. The story drew me in and makes me want more, so looking forward to the next chapter. The fact your RL decisions affect your game makes a huge difference and you feel a connection.

I've just completed the storyline based in Kesi. It is good and I enjoyed playing. The interactions with the NPCs worked well and I didn't even think to check my Inventory! Having checked the Master of Lore website, it looks like there are many different worlds and scenarios to choose from. I'm really interested to find out what's happening in the future.

This is what AI was meant for in my opinion. I cannot wait to have more options available as well.

i reached my thread limit yesterday and am so sad. As soon as I started to understand the boundaries of what was possible a little bit more, I started to feel way more immersed in my game and a little bit (a lot a bit) addicted. any idea when we'll be able to play more?

I appreciate the Loremaster’s responses when you’re attempting something that you can’t do or how it asks for a more specific action if it needs it. I see lots of potential and can’t wait to see where the project goes!

In certain cases, it’s helpful to be a bit more lengthy in your prompts. Like ask it what actualy happens. Also, you gotta take the risk sometimes, dice rerolls make it pretty safe.
